Shimokitazawa Arts is pleased to present "Memory, scale, again & again" two person exhibition by Furuya Kotomi & Maruyama Satowa. Furuya Kotomi was born in Tokyo, 1997, graduated from painting, Tokyo Zokei University, 2022 and is currently in painting, Graduate School of Tokyo Zokei University. Focusing on cloth, which is a common support for paintings, she has continued to attempt to unravel and modify the structures of daily necessities, mainly cloth. Maruyama Satowa was born in Tokyo, 1999, graduated from sculpture, Tokyo Zokei University, 2022 and is currently in Graduate School of Musashino Art University, Fine Arts Course, Sculpture. She creates works based on her memories and images that come to mind while kneading clay.
Furuya Kotomi uses everyday items such as work gloves, earphone cords, and handicraft thread as materials. And she unravels their structures and creates works that go back and forth between something else and the actual thing. Maruyama Satowa sets a time limit until the clay reaches a certain hardness, and gives form to the memories that come to mind. They also share a common sense of coloring, skillfully using ambiguous tones, and their collaborative works were created so smoothly that even they theirselves are surprised, with each other's materials and ideas complementing each other. Their works are connected as if in a cycle.
This exhibition by the duo, who are preparing for their graduate school graduation exhibition in the new year, will try to create a new memory and scale perspective (= linking to the exhibition title "Memory, scale, again & again") by exhibiting a combination of new and past works. The artists theirselves will encounter their own works that they have never seen before, and for the viewers it will be an experience that changes the resolution of their daily lives and brings a little freshness to their daily lives. Please take a look at the history and future prospects of Furuya Kotomi and Maruyama Satowa's quest that began with their daily lives.

Artist statement
As a starting point for paintings, I explore the existence of cloth in daily necessities such as clothes and curtains, and unravels the structure of these objects. While working with various techniques such as cloth and paint, cloth and embroidery, and cloth and the body, I move between categories of expressive media and changes the methods and structures of paintings, clothing, and handicrafts according to my own sensibilities.

Am I questioning the existing value of the work based on its fixed form, or trying out a new method for creating a painting structure that I can decide for myself ?

Artist statement
By setting a time- limit until the clay dries, I create an opportunity to confront my own memories. By performing the act of remembering and moving the hands at the same time, an unexpected form is recorded in the clay.
In recent years, in addition to ceramics, I have focused on cooking utensils, daily necessities, and other forms made to suit human activities, and have incorporated them into my works.
