"wonderland" SHANG HUINING, Fujiwara Ayame, Morisakorisa, Wada Sakura

January 17 - 28, 2024
1-7pm

Closed on Mon and Tue.

Shimokitazawa Arts is pleased to present group exhibition "wonderland" by four artists. "Wonderland" has a wide range of images, including wonders of nature, wonderful scenery, a mysterious Alice-like world, and Haruki Murakami's novels. All of them are worlds that move your heart, and that experience illuminates you from within. In this exhibition, four artists will create a unique fantasy world "wonderland" using their own colors, lines, and shapes. Please take a look at the exhibition of small works and drawings to celebrate a new year.

Concept for works

I express a parallel world.
If a revolution or war occurs in reality, it will also occur in the other world, and they have two forms, one in reality and one in a parallel world.
As I paint them, I visualize them, and I feel as if they're really alive.
The reason why my paintings oscillate between figurative and abstract is because the resolution of the scene is different.

I will express the absurdities of life, dream-like happy events, and weave a story with words.
I really hope that you can appreciate my works from multiple angles.
We live in a complicated world where we don't know how much of it is true, but I will continue to advocate for the dignity that needs to be protected through painting.
The person painted will become the narrator of a new story.

Artist Statement
Wada Sakura reconsiders the problems that arise in human communities (distance and balance) by replacing them with the work and the viewer, and creates works to explore these problems. Quoting stories and animations that were familiar to me during my childhood is an attempt to encourage mutual negotiation between the work and the viewer. Believing that it is possible to discover multi-perspective evidence through a variety of mediums, I create works every day in mediums that I'm physically interested in.
