Takahashi Mai solo exhibition HUG
January 22 - February 2, 2025
1-7 pm
Closed on Jan. 27 & 28.
Shimokitazawa Arts is pleased to present "HUG", the first exhibition in Tokyo by Kyoto based artist, Takahashi Mai. Takahashi Mai wad born in Kyoto, 2001 and graduated from Kyoto University of Arts, Oil Painting Course in 2024. Hes works are characterized by deformed familiar motifs and vivid colors that fill the screen, using a variety of media such as oil, acrylic, crayon, and colored pencil. When we look at Takahashi's works, we're excited by their easy and free shapes and colorful colors, and we feel nostalgic and warm. All of Takahashi's works are based on her hometown, and she cherishes the things, animals, plants, sounds, scents, the earth, the sky, and the people she has met who don't appear on screen, there. This is probably because the feelings are put into it.
This solo exhibition, which will be her first in Tokyo, will also feature works that combine small and medium-sized canvases to form large screens, which were also featured in last year's Kyoto University of Arts graduation exhibition. During this coldest time of the year, we hope that each viewer will be able to imagine their hometown while being surrounded by Takahashi Mai's heartwarming works.

Artist statement
For me, painting is communication. Since I was young, I wanted to make people happy, so I drew pictures and gave them presents. Even now, my fundamental thoughts and objectives have not changed. I will try to recreate in paintings the thrilling things I have encountered so far, and share the warm and exciting feelings with the viewers.
